What is a blind reference?

A blind reference is a conversation a buyer has with one of a vendor's customers that the vendor did not arrange and may not know about.

How a blind reference works

Buyers know that the references a vendor offers are chosen because they are happy. To balance that, many buyers also look for customers the vendor did not pick. They ask around their own network, look at who lists the product on a professional profile, or contact a former colleague who now works at one of the vendor's customers.

The term is also used in hiring, where it means a reference check with someone the candidate did not name. The idea is the same in both cases: the person being asked was not selected by the party being evaluated.

Why it matters

For buyers, a blind reference feels more candid, because nobody has prepared the customer. For vendors, it is a conversation they cannot shape and usually never hear about. The customer who takes the call may be a new user, someone in the middle of a difficult rollout, or someone who did not want to be contacted at all.

An example

A buyer evaluating a vendor notices that Sample Logistics uses the same product. The buyer knows Sam Sample there from a previous job and sends a message asking how it is going. The vendor never learns the conversation took place.

Common mistakes

  • Vendors treating blind references as hostile. They are a normal part of careful buying and cannot be prevented.
  • Offering only two or three hand-picked references. A narrow list is what pushes buyers to go looking elsewhere.
  • Buyers treating one unprepared opinion as the whole picture. A single user may not know the full deployment.
  • Buyers contacting people who never agreed to be asked. It costs that person time they did not offer.

The practical answer for a vendor is to give buyers a wider, more honest choice of consenting customers, each with clear privacy controls over what is shown and how they are contacted. Buyers who can choose for themselves have less reason to go around the vendor.
